How to prepare for a language exam without stress
Going by the title, everyone wants an answer: how do you get through something so stressful without stress? The exam is usually the stage students like least, because not everything depends on knowledge. Students are often very well prepared, but the emotional load takes over in that moment, and if five minutes earlier you knew everything, now you can't remember a thing.
If you want the answer, here are some tips from personal experience:
- Beyond the studying itself, which we're taking for granted, learn with logic. By trying to memorise things, you overload your brain, and in a moment of stress you forget it all. Learning with logic means connecting things so you never forget them.
- Practise at home in advance. Now you might ask: what do I practise when I don't know the test and the questions? Language exams usually follow the same format, where the type of questions and tasks is almost the same every time. What you need to do is research the formats, find similar exercises online and prepare for what awaits you on exam day. When you know what you'll face, handling the pressure is easier.
- Preparation courses are another help, with teachers who know international exams and have experience with them. Someone else's experience is very useful, because the teacher knows exactly where you should focus, which points to keep in mind and which strategies to use.
Still, since stress is part of all of us, something internal, managing it is in our own hands. Here's one more friendly tip: on exam day, wake up with positive energy, believe in yourself and bring your mind the greatest calm you can. After all, it's only a test: your knowledge is worth more than a few points on paper. Good luck, you'll make it!
