How long does it take to learn a foreign language?

One of the questions we hear most often at our school is: “How long does it take to learn this language?” And the most honest answer is: it depends. It's probably not the answer you wanted to hear, but it's the truth. We all learn differently. Some have more time, others have more motivation. Fortunately, there are a few things that can help you understand what speeds up and what slows down your language journey.

What does the speed of learning a language depend on? There are several factors:

  1. The language you're learning. If you're learning German or English, you'll most likely learn it faster than Japanese. Some languages are closer to Albanian and easier to understand.
  2. How much time you give it. The more often you practise, the better you'll learn the language. Even 15 minutes a day, done regularly, can have far more effect than 2 hours once a month.
  3. How you learn it. Learning only from books is slow. Learning through communication, real exercises, language games and conversation is much more effective, especially if you're part of a course where people speak, not only write.
  4. Your daily life. Do you have someone you can speak the language with? Do you use apps? Do you watch videos or listen to music? The more you use the language every day, the faster it becomes part of you.
  5. Your goal. If you're learning to pass an exam, you'll probably focus harder. If you're learning for a trip, you'll learn more everyday expressions. Both are worthwhile, but they change the way you learn.

Is there an average? How many hours does it really take?

According to the European levels (CEFR), these are the average hours for each level:

  • A1 – A2 (beginner): 100–200 hours
  • B1 – B2 (intermediate): 350–400 hours
  • C1 – C2 (advanced): 600+ hours

Can I speak within a few months?

Yes. If you commit seriously, in 3 months you can talk about yourself, your family and simple situations. Within 6 months, with a structured course, you can manage everyday conversations, ask questions and answer them. Within 1 year, many of our students at Ré nao feel confident enough to travel or to pass an exam.

What slows the process down?

  • Thoughts like: “I've got time, I'll learn when I get the chance…”
  • Not practising speaking
  • Fear of making mistakes
  • Learning only theory, without exercises and language activities

What speeds it up?

  • Consistency. Even 20 minutes a day is worth much more than an hour once a week.
  • Real conversations.
  • Using technology: apps, videos, podcasts, films.
  • Joining a regular course with structure and feedback from the teacher.

The question isn't “How long does it take?” but “How much time am I ready to give the language every day?” Because however long the road, it starts with a single step. Start TODAY!
